In May 2014, Hector Cachu opened the ‘doors’ of his business: FlexNUp Nutrition. Hector had been involved in the fitness industry for a number of years, and watched as the sport supplement industry grew year after year. Industry data showed that the industry had been experiencing 10% annual growth ever since 2010. The first set of doors for FlexNUp were virtual. Hector took online orders from local customers, and then made personal deliveries of his products. Using social media to help build his brand, FlexNUp was able to get traction in the City of Montclair, as well as the neighboring cities of Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Chino, Pomona, Fontana and Claremont.
Although sales were good, Hector always knew that the true potential of the business could not be realized until he could open up a retail shop. He did not want to just choose a location because it was the lowest rent around. Instead, he decided to take the time to determine which location would be most centralized for his customer base. Hector ultimately found a location that was under construction on Central Avenue in Montclair, just south of the 10 Freeway and the Montclair Plaza. The complex would have major tenants such as Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s, Sleep Number, and Tommy’s Burgers.
As he would need money to expand his inventory when he opened the retail location, as well as cover construction costs, Hector turned his attention to how he would finance the expansion of his small business. He started developing a business plan and financial projections, knowing that he would ultimately need to submit these documents to a local bank in order to obtain a small business loan. It was then that he started working with Robert Usher, a Business Consultant with the Inland Empire Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Robert helped Hector to refine his sales, expense, and cash flow projections, as well as his marketing plan. An analysis of demographic data obtained from the City of Montclair further supported the financial projections that had been created. With his business plan reviewed, revised and finalized, Hector was now ready to submit a loan request to the bank. As many startup small business owners find, however, banks are reluctant to make loans to new businesses. Regardless of the potential they saw in FlexNUp, banks went the conservative route; and as a result Hector was not able to secure a traditional bank business loan.
Determined to make the retail location a reality, Hector did not give up and ultimately secured a private loan for his expansion. On March 29th, 2016, all of his hard work paid off, and Hector Cachu was able to reach a major milestone for his business: opening the doors on his brick and mortar store. FlexNUp Nutrition is located at 9359 Central Avenue in Montclair. It offers a full line of energy, recovery, and weight-loss supplements.
